The Work: Language, Power and Arts…

The chapter examines the meanings of “the work” for vocalists who engage in vocal arts of different kinds in the area of Chicago and the Midwest. In order to better understand the transformative power of the vocal performance of “work”, I develop an analysis of radio interviews, live performances and conversation that aim at underscoring how “the work” is intended as a counter-power to capitalist economy and exploitation of black labor.
